How Safe are Converted Wheelchair Minivans?

As with any other vehicle, one of the biggest concerns on a customer’s mind is safety. After all, a converted minivan is going to be transporting you and your loved ones on a daily basis. When you’re out on the road, you want the peace of mind of knowing you’re driving in well-designed vehicle that’s built for safety.

Many of the benefits of a converted wheelchair minivan are readily apparent to those looking for an accessible vehicle. They’re economical, being cheaper than a full-size van and allowing you to save on gas money. However, one of the most common questions we get about converted wheelchair minivans is whether or not they’re very safe.

In a nutshell, yes! AutoAbility converted wheelchair minivans are just as safe as their unconverted counterparts.

One of the most common questions people ask is whether or not modifying the floor leaves a van safe. We build our conversions with ultra-strong metal alloy shell on a steel frame, which offers a perfect combination of strength while remaining lightweight. The strength provides resilience and durability in the event of an accident. The lightweight material puts less stress on the vehicle, resulting in a longer life and less maintenance. This reduced stress is a key component of the renowned longevity and durability of AutoAbility’s converted minivans.

Still not convinced? Every single AutoAbility vehicle has met or exceeded all Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) and Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (CMVSS) standards. To make sure our vans are safe as can be, we put them through rigorous crash testing. In our crash testing, we first build a van exactly as we would for a customer.

After building the prototype, we put the vehicle through a series of crash tests designed to assess the performance of the vehicle in a wide array of crashes. This includes a 30mph frontal impact, a 50 mph rear impact, and a 33.5 mph side impact, as well as a complete 360 degree rollover to test a worst case scenario. As of this writing, we have never had to perform a test twice-- each of our vehicles has completely passed the test the first time.
